เต่ากับนกอินทรี
นี่คือรูปหล่อเนื้อสำริดอายุนับร้อยปีที่ครูบาอาจารย์ท่านสร้างเพื่อแฝงคติธรรมไว้บอกสอนชนรุ่นหลัง เป็นประติมากรรมที่อ้างอิงถึงนิทานอีสปเรื่อง "เต่ากับนกอินทรี" ดังที่จะเล่าต่อไปนี้:
กาลครั้งหนึ่งนานมาแล้วเต่าตัวหนึ่งแหงนมองบนฟ้า เห็นนกบินล่องเวหา ก็อยากบินได้อย่างนกบ้าง วันหนึ่งเจอเต่าตัวนั้นได้พบกับนกอินทรี เต่าจึงขอให้นกอินทรีสอนบินให้หน่อย นกอินทรีจึงตอบว่า “ไม่มีทางเป็นไปได้หรอก เพราะเต่าไม่มีปีกเหมือนกับนก” แต่เต่าก็ไม่ยอมเชื่อนกอินทรี ยืนยันว่าตัวเองจะบินให้ได้
นกอินทรีก็ตามใจเต่า เอากรงเล็บจับกระดองแล้วพาเต่าบินขึ้นฟ้าตามที่เต่าขอ ผ่านไปสักพักหนึ่ง เต่าก็คิดว่าตนเองน่าจะบินได้เหมือนนกอินทรี เต่าเลยบอกนกอินทรีว่าให้ปล่อยกรงเล็บได้เลย นกอินทรีก็ไม่ยอมปล่อยเพราะรู้ว่ายังไงเต่าก็บินไม่ได้ แต่เต่าไม่ได้คิดอย่างนั้น
เต่าจึงดิ้นตัวไปมา จนเอาตนเองออกจากกรงเล็บของนกอินทรีได้ แต่ในที่สุดเต่าก็รู้ว่าสิ่งที่ตนเองคิดนั้นผิดมหันต์ ในขณะที่ตนเองกำลังร่วงลงมาจากฟ้า อนิจจาในช่วงเวลานั้น เต่าก็ไม่ทันแก้ไขอะไรได้แล้ว สุดท้ายเต่าก็ตกลงสู่พื้นดินและสิ้นใจไป
นิทานเรื่องนี้สอนให้รู้ว่า: “ความทะเยอทะยาน ใฝ่สูงเกินตัว มักนำความเดือดร้อนมาให้”
The Tortoise And The Eagle.
This is a cast bronze figure, over a hundred years old, created by revered masters of old. It was made not just as a piece of sacred art, but as a vessel of wisdom, to teach future generations an important lesson. It is a sculpture inspired by the Aesop's fable "The Tortoise And The Eagle", as told below:
Once upon a time, there was a tortoise who often looked up at the sky and admired the birds flying freely above. One day, he saw an eagle soaring through the clouds and thought, “How I wish I could fly like that”. Eventually, the tortoise met the eagle and begged him: “Please, teach me how to fly”. The eagle replied, “That’s impossible. You don’t have wings like I do”. But the tortoise refused to listen. He was stubborn and confident. “I’ll find a way to fly, you’ll see”.
So the eagle gave in. He gripped the tortoise’s shell tightly with his talons and lifted him into the sky, soaring higher and higher, just as the tortoise had dreamed. After a while, the tortoise, feeling bold and proud, said, “You can let go now, I believe I can fly on my own”. The eagle refused. “No. You’ll fall. You weren’t made to fly”. But the tortoise wouldn’t listen.
He struggled and twisted until he finally broke free from the eagle’s grasp. For a brief moment, he felt triumphant. But in the very next moment, he realized he was falling very fast. There was no time to fix his mistake. And as he plummeted toward the ground, he finally understood the truth, but it was too late. The tortoise crashed into the earth, and that was the end of him.
The Moral Of The Story: Don’t try to do things beyond your nature, or you may end up hurting yourself.
